St. Joseph Catholic School has been a learning institution in this community for 145 years. The original school was established in 1863. In the early years, St. Joseph Catholic School had to close and reopen several times due to the poor facilities and/or lack of staff. By January 10, 1890, with 83 students and competently staffed by the Sisters of Mercy, the doors of St Joseph Catholic School were finally opened permanently. Even after a devastating fire in 1920 destroyed the school, the St. Joseph Catholic School families persevered and found alternative locations so their children’s education could continue. With a fund drive in 1954 a new school was built in its present location behind St. Joseph Catholic Church on the corner of 6th Avenue. Another fund drive was initiated in 2001 which resulted in renovations that improved the school and church facilities.
St. Joseph Catholic School today houses two sections of preschool and one section each of kindergarten through 8th grade. It is an accredited school staffed by 16 certified teachers with a combined experience of more than 170 years. We also have two educational aides - one in preschool and one in kindergarten.
